A Simple Life and the Song Light
Sometimes inspiration comes in the most unexpected places.
Recently I have been spending a lot of time in a campervan while working through practical matters around our burned-down house. The campervan is a very simple space — much smaller than a normal home — and it has an interesting feature: it is almost impossible to escape the light.
Apart from the side windows with thin, accordion curtains, the van has ceiling windows made of opaque panels, similar to shower room glass. They are not clear, but they let the sunlight pour through all day long. The light spreads softly through the small space from morning until evening. Even when clouds pass overhead, the brightness still filters in.
You become very aware of it.
In a space that small, the light is constant. It surrounds you quietly while you work, read, cook, or simply sit and think.
At the same time, some of my day is spent outside in the garden — doing gentle stretching to ease my back pain, pulling weeds, and working with a small compost heap.
Gardens are simple teachers. Seeds, soil, rain, patience, and time. Life quietly grows according to laws the Creator put in place long ago.
Watching that process unfold has a way of clearing the mind.
There is an old poetic expression that speaks of someone who has spent their days outdoors working among the vineyards — someone who says that the sun has gazed upon them. It is a simple way of describing a life lived under the open sky, close to the rhythms of the earth. Garden work has a way of doing that. The sun marks the passing hours, the soil teaches patience, and even a compost heap reminds us that what seems finished can return to life again. In those quiet rhythms, it becomes easier to appreciate the wisdom of the One who designed the earth and everything that grows within it.
In contrast, the modern world can feel noisy and complicated. News, opinions, and constant information can make life feel overwhelming.
Yet the Bible describes God’s guidance in a much simpler way. It compares His Word to a light that helps us see where to step next.
Psalm 119:105 says:
“Your word is a lamp to my foot, and a light for my path.”
A lamp does not illuminate an entire journey at once. It simply lights the next step.
In the same way, the wisdom found in Scripture can bring clarity in a confusing world. It helps us move forward calmly, step by step.
Living in a small space filled with quiet light, and spending time working with the soil, has reminded me how powerful simplicity can be.
The song accompanying this post was inspired by that experience — the light quietly filling a small place, the rhythms of the garden, and the desire to learn from the One who designed it all.
The One who knows how seeds grow, seasons change, and life flourishes.
And sometimes, when life slows down, we begin to notice that light again.
Even in the simplest places. 🌿
Lyrics
Even in the shade
Light pours in from every angle
Though I am a mess
And my fears are tangled
Your light never fades away
Light, light, light
The sun gazes down on me
Light, light, light
Ever shining faithfully
In this simple life
Of garden weeds, fire, and ashes
I feel the earth breathe
As the distant thunder crashes
And you are guiding me
Light, light, light
The sun gazes down on me
Light, light, light
Ever shining faithfully
So teach me forever
Teach me, teach me evermore
Show me the secret
Of the seed and the soil
The rain and the warmth of the sun
Teach me the garden
The way that the sweet vines climb
The patience of seasons
The wisdom of time
Until your kingdom comes
Light, light, light
Your sunlight covers me
Light, light, light
Ever shining faithfully
